What Is Group Coaching Certification? Who It's For, and How It Works

Group coaching certification trains you to hold depth for a whole room (2987)

Awaken trains coaches to sit with one person with real depth and presence, and many feel a natural pull afterward to take that same gift and offer it to a room. Group coaching certification is exactly that progression, training you to hold a whole room's process at once, and to trust the room itself as sacred ground where healing multiplies.

Awaken's ICF-accredited group coaching certification course is built on our bespoke five-element framework for what actually creates lasting, soul-level change in a group.

If you already know how to sit with one person in depth, and feel a calling toward something larger, a room where people become each other's grace, this is for you. How it works is simple in principle, rich in practice: you learn the structure that makes a group safe enough to go deep in, you build your own program alongside a cohort that models exactly what you're learning to create, and you leave holding something real and alive, a program ready for the people who are already waiting for you.

The same pull that draws a client into a group program is what draws a coach into a cohort-based training. Peer witnessing. Shared accountability. A belonging that outlasts the program itself. You'll feel that container from the inside, the same one you're learning to build, and feel how much love actually lives inside it.

The Appeal of Group Coaching

Group coaching amplifies what already makes coaching sacred: presence, deep listening, and a willingness to be changed by what you witness, extending 1:1 depth into a second, distinct kind of transformation that happens in community rather than in solitude.

  • Peer witnessing. Watching someone else voice the very thing they've never said aloud can land deeper than any reassurance offered in words, because being truly seen is its own kind of grace.
  • Being both witness and witnessed. Holding space for someone else's breakthrough often opens a doorway to your own, since presence given freely tends to return.
  • Shared accountability. A cohort of people showing up vulnerable together creates its own gentle, communal kind of holding, the pull of being witnessed by many at once.
  • Access. Group pricing brings transformation work within reach for far more people than 1:1 rates alone, widening the circle of who gets to feel held.
  • Momentum. A cohort has a start date, an end date, and other people moving alongside you, turning the whole structure into a shared act of faith.
  • Belonging. Many of the best cohorts stay in touch long after the program ends, becoming a small, chosen community. That continued connection often matters as much as the content itself.

These are the reasons your future clients will sign up. Understanding them at a soul level, as much as a strategic one, is where designing a program that actually sells begins.

What to Look For in a Group Coaching Certification Program

Every program in this space will tell you it's the right one. A few honest questions, held gently rather than checked off, cut through that faster than any comparison chart:

  • Is it actually ICF-accredited, with a clear hour count? Look past the word "accredited" on its own, and ask for the specific number of hours behind it.
  • How small is the cohort? A room of forty teaches theory. A room of eight becomes a community, one small enough to truly hold you while you build.
  • Do you leave with a finished program, or a folder of frameworks? The difference between a course that teaches the theory of group coaching and one that has you build, present, and refine your own program during the course itself is the difference between learning about transformation and actually living inside it.
  • Does the faculty actually run group programs themselves? Look for instructors with a real, lived track record of building and holding their own groups, teaching from experience rather than theory alone.
  • Is there a community that outlasts the course? The best group coaching training models the very thing it teaches: a cohort that keeps holding each other long after graduation.
  • Does the program's philosophy match how you already coach? A program built around depth, presence, and spiritual growth will feel entirely different from one built purely around business scaling. Both paths are valid; only one will feel like coming home.

The Case for Building a Group Coaching Program

Coaching craft

  • Codifies your method into an owned, sacred framework of your own, the same way Awaken's Five Elements became a defining piece of this course
  • Lets you test and refine that method across a full cohort at once, moving at the pace of a whole room's collective heartbeat rather than one relationship
  • Builds facilitation and group dynamics skills, opening a path into corporate and organizational coaching work where this same presence is just as needed

Business and capacity

  • Serves many people in the same hour, expanding your reach without proportionally expanding your hours
  • Creates a concrete, launchable offer with a start date, ready to market on its own
  • Adds a second revenue stream alongside your 1:1 practice, giving your business more resilience and your calling more room to grow
  • Becomes the foundation for bigger offers over time, masterminds, retreats, signature courses, each one an extension of the same loving container

Sustainability, for you

  • Shares emotional holding across the whole group, so you are supported by the room as much as you are holding it, session after session, a mutual kind of grace
  • Builds your own professional community, since past cohort members frequently return, refer, and become companions in your ongoing work

Credentialing hours Every group you hold, up to fifteen people, builds toward your ICF coaching hours exactly as your 1:1 work does. Your credential grows right alongside your community.

Who This Is For

This course trains coaches to hold a room with the same depth they already bring to one person, and it's built for:

  • 1:1 coaches, credentialed or in training, ready to expand a practice they've already built well
  • Coaches with an existing audience or platform, ready to turn that reach into a scalable, soul-aligned offer
  • Coaches already working inside organizations who want to formalize what they're doing into a structured group program
  • Coaches whose real gift is holding a room, a distinct and equally sacred calling in its own right
  • Coaches adding a second modality alongside an existing 1:1 practice

If you're in an adjacent role and building toward coaching: this course assumes a coaching foundation already alive in you, since group facilitation builds on coaching skills rather than teaching them from scratch. What Group Coaching Can Look Like

A group coaching program can take many shapes, each one a different expression of the same underlying container. The format that fits depends on your niche, your audience, and how you already work.

  • Open cohort programs. A defined group moving through a shared journey together, with a start and end date. This is one of the formats Awaken's course teaches you to build.
  • Ongoing memberships. A rolling community with continuous access rather than a fixed cohort window, a home people can return to again and again.
  • Corporate and organizational coaching. Bringing group coaching into a workplace setting, often alongside existing consulting or training relationships.
  • Masterminds. Smaller, often higher-touch peer groups, frequently used as a next step after a coach's first cohort program.
  • Hybrid models. 1:1 coaching paired with a group container, giving clients both individual depth and communal connection.
  • Spiritually oriented groups. Some of the deepest group work holds space for presence, meaning, and spiritual growth alongside practical goals, the same territory covered in Spiritual Coach Certification: ICF-Accredited Programs Explained.

Faculty member Bob Armour, PCC, built his group coaching program in a corporate context. He kept noticing that small businesses on the same high street had worked side by side for years, ready for a reason to finally connect. That noticing became the Healthy High Street program, which he built during the certification course and launched three months after graduating. He now brings the same framework, and the same presence, into corporate settings every week.

How Awaken's Group Coaching Certification Works

The Five Elements framework. Structure is what turns a group with a coach in the room into an actual group coaching program, a living container rather than a conversation. What separates real change from a facilitated conversation is structure held with love. Read the full framework in The Transformational Group Coaching Framework: 5 Elements That Create Lasting Change.

ICF accreditation. The course is accredited for 40 ICF Core Competency hours, counting toward your ACC, PCC, or MCC credential path or renewal. You'll receive the most valuable kind of coach training hours along with structured mentorship. Our container is built on presence as much as competency. Your client coaching hours and the ICF credentialing exam itself remain your own work, completed independently of any training provider.

Built to launch. You leave the course having designed, presented, and refined your actual group coaching program, with feedback from faculty and peers, ready to take to market and to hold real people well. Bob's Healthy High Street program above is a living example of that pattern: built during the course, launched three months after.

Finding your starting point. Most coaches assume building a group program starts with market research and a spreadsheet. In practice, it almost always starts with a pattern you keep noticing across your 1:1 clients, a gap nobody else is filling, a feeling that keeps resurfacing until you finally listen to it. I write about this more fully in How to Build a Group Coaching Program: Start With What Already Found You.

Why I Built This Course

A group coaching methodology found me before I ever set out to build one. I was coaching women one at a time, and I kept noticing the same thing: someone would share something in a session and say she'd never told another living soul. Then I'd coach that woman's closest friend, who would share the exact same secret, the exact same weight. I started wondering what it would look like if those two women were in a room together instead of carrying it alone.

That wondering became my first group, The Heroine's Quest. I launched it while I was terrified to start it. The group helped women get brave and live their passions inside a safe community, becoming the seed of the group coaching program I still offer today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a group coaching certification program? A structured, ICF-accredited training that teaches coaches how to design, market, and facilitate a group coaching program, distinct from the individual-client skills taught in foundational coach certification. At its heart, it teaches you to hold many hearts at once.

Does group coaching count toward my ICF credentialing hours? Yes. Every group you hold, up to fifteen people, builds toward your ICF coaching hours exactly as your 1:1 work does, as long as the work is coaching rather than teaching, consulting, or mentoring.

Is Awaken's Group Coaching Certification ICF accredited? Yes. The course is accredited by the International Coaching Federation for 40 hours of core competency training. Those hours suit coaches who need additional training toward a Level 2 credential and a PCC application, and they work equally well for coaches in a renewal cycle who need core competency hours to maintain a credential they already hold.

How do I find my niche for a group coaching program? Start with what you've already noticed. What themes keep appearing across your 1:1 clients? What gap keeps showing up that nobody else is filling? Identifying your "who" and your "what" is one of the first, most tender pieces of work in this course.

Do I need a group coaching certification if I'm already ICF credentialed? Your existing credential covers your 1:1 coaching competencies. Facilitation, group dynamics, and program design are a separate skill set, which is why group coaching certification is a common next step for credentialed coaches expanding into group work.

Do I need to already be a coach to take this course? Yes. This course builds on the skills taught in certified coach training, like Awaken's All-in-One virtual certification. If you're coming from an adjacent field, perhaps as a counselor, therapist, or facilitator feeling this pull, whether your existing experience fits is worth talking through directly. Book an intro call to explore it together, or read our complete guide to coach certification training to see what the program covers first."
