There's More Than One Way to Meet Your ICF Renewal Hours

If you searched for a way to earn your ICF continuing education hours, you have probably found the same thing everyone else does: a checklist.

• Forty class hours to renew your credential, including
• At least twenty-four Core Competency hours
• Three of Core Competency hours in ethics
• Up to sixteen more hours in Resource Development
• Submit your documentation, done.

Every guide on the topic, including the ICF's own, walks through the same math and stops there.

Here is what most of those guides never mention. The hours themselves are only half the story. Where you earn them, and who you earn them alongside, shapes what you carry forward long after your renewal application is filed.

I have spent years training coaches and guiding them through this exact process, and I have watched two very different experiences produce the same certificate. One coach treats their forty hours as an errand, something to clear off a list before a deadline. Another coach spends those same hours in a real community, deepening their presence, sharpening their competencies alongside peers who care about the same things they do. Both walk away credentialed.

Only one walks away changed.

I remember well the day I sat with a man who had received a certificate from another coach training program. He was nearing the time to apply for his ICF credential, and he clearly didn't know how to coach. I asked him straight out how he had finished his coach training hours. This may seem like an extreme example, but he had been in "live" sessions with hundreds of his closest friends. He had to enter a code to prove he had shown up. He figured out how to game the system by being there when the code was mentioned, but actually spending his class time writing his emails. He got a certificate for 40 hours of coach training without ever once showing up. Hearing his pride in this story got me angry enough to finally found Awaken Coach Institute. 

I knew there were schools out there that were just pumping out certifications, but his story made my blood run cold. A Note on Accreditation, So You Know Exactly What You Are Getting 

Awaken Coach Institute holds ICF accreditation at Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. This accreditation covers coach-specific training programs that prepare you for your ACC, PCC, or MCC application. Your Awaken certificate never expires. That means that you can use your Awaken documentation toward your ICF credential any time in your life. 

Once you receive your ICF credential, you're signing on to lifelong learning. Not only will you continue to coach, you'll continue receiving continuing professional development: 40 additional hours every three years.  Because Awaken offers hundreds of hours of courses that are designated as valid for all three levels of credentialing, you can use Awaken's training hours as your professional development hours (sometimes called CCEs - Continuing Coach Education) toward your credential renewal at any level.

What Actually Counts Toward Your Forty Hours  

The ICF splits your renewal requirement into two categories. Core Competency hours, a minimum of twenty-four, cover education that directly relates to or expands on the ICF Core Competencies. Three of those must be in coaching ethics. Resource Development hours, up to sixteen, cover everything else that strengthens your practice: business building, coaching tools, assessments, and similar professional development.

Mentor coaching and coaching supervision both count as Core Competency hours, up to ten hours each per renewal cycle. If you are renewing an ACC, ten hours of mentor coaching remain mandatory. PCC and MCC renewal does not require mentor coaching, though many coaches choose to continue it for the depth it offers rather than the requirement it satisfies. Many coaches choose our Group Coaching Certification Course, which is accredited for 40 Core Competency hours, to complete their entire renewal requirements in one fell swoop, while also building a stronger coaching business in a community of other like-hearted coaches.

Most paths to these hours treat them as a transaction. Buy a course, log the certificate, move on. If You Are Applying for Your First Credential, Not Renewing  

Everything above speaks to coaches who already hold a credential. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Awaken's certificate for my CCE hours? Yes. You receive Awaken certification for every event you attend in our community, which we document according to the ICF's guidelines. When you apply for your credential renewal, you upload the documentation we provide, which will specify the number of core competency hours, resource development hours, and ethics hours you've completed. We know the ins-and-outs of the exact working the ICF is looking for, so your application is as smooth as possible.

How many hours do I need to renew my ICF credential? Every renewal requires forty Continuing Coach Education hours across a three-year cycle, with at least twenty-four in Core Competencies, including three in ethics. ACC renewal requires ten hours of mentor coaching among the Core Competency hours.

Do mentor coaching and supervision hours count toward my forty hours? Yes, up to ten hours each per renewal cycle, and both count as Core Competency hours.

What is changing with the ICF Mentor Coach Specialization, and does it affect my renewal? Starting January 1, 2027, any mentor coaching used toward a credential, including renewal, must come from a mentor holding the ICF's new Mentor Coach Specialization.
